Why Do You Need Hearing Protection With Firearms
I don’t know if you ever noticed but shooting a gun is extremely loud and can be heard from miles away.
The average shot from a firearm can be measured anywhere from 140 – 150 decibels.
So…what exactly does that mean? It means that you can go deaf if you continue to shoot a firearm without proper ear protection!
Basically, professionals warn that anything over 85 decibels can cause hearing loss.
Not to worry! With so many different types, sizes and styles of hearing protection there is no excuse not to have it.
What Are The Different Types Of Ear Protection For Firearms
There are many different types but we will cover the 3 best styles of hearing protection.
Basically, there are earplugs, passive ear muffs and electronic hearing protection muffs.
Passive earmuffs basically don’t use any electronic components.
- Earplugs: I’m pretty sure you’ve seen them, they are very inexpensive and basically can be rolled up and stuck into your ear.
- Passive Ear Muffs: These look like cordless DJ style headphones…You know…Those big looking headphones that cover your entire ear. However, using earphones is not considered safe in a replacement for proper ear muffs.
- Electronic Ear Muffs: These are basically like ear muffs, they cover your entire ear. The difference is they use electronic technology that will reduce the noise when a shot is fired. These are great because you can leave them on and still hear your partner or anyone around talking. It will only dampen the sound when a shot is fired.
What Is The Hearing Protection Rating For Shooting?
By law, all hearing protection products need to have an NRR rating. NRR stands for Noise Reduction Rating.
NRR ratings can extend from 0 to 33 decibels. 33 being the highest level of protection.
The higher the level the better the noise reduction provided.
So what does all this mean?
Basically, let’s say you are shooting a 9mm firearm. A 9mm firearm is rated at 160db
If you have hearing protection rated at 33DB you are now exposed to 127DB.
But didn’t you say anything above 80DB can cause hearing loss? That is correct. However, would you rather be exposed to constant 160DB or 127DB?
Trust me, it makes a difference.
Just to give you an idea of decibels here is a chart.
Here is a chart showing the decibels from different types of firearms:
- .38 Revolver – 150 dB
- 9mm – 160 dB
- .45 Semi-Automatic – 165 dB
- .357 Revolver – 160 dB
- 12 Gauge Shotgun – 155 dB
- .22 Rifle – 145 dB
- A normal conversation is at about 60 dB.
Are Noise Cancelling Headphones Hearing Protection?
Don’t get me wrong, any type of hearing protection is better than no hearing protection. However, we do not recommend it over a real hearing protection device.
Here is why.
When using a noise canceling headphones they work with continuous sounds that are quieter than the loudest sound the headphones produce.
A shot from a gun is way louder than that.
If you want to get technical.
Noise-Canceling headphones use a technology which needs time to analyze the sound that it needs to cancel.
A quick BANG! From a firearm gives the noise canceling headphones no time for the system to cancel the noise.
What Type Of Hearing Protection Is Best?
When it comes to the best it’s just a matter of preference. Otherwise, hearing protection with a rating of NRR 33 would be considered the best when it comes to shooting.
We would recommend ear muffs or electronic ear muffs with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 33.
Conclusion
